Course Description
Mankind is facing a catastrophe of our own making. Man-made greenhouse gas emissions from energy-producing fossil-fuel combustion have raised the atmospheric carbon dioxide level by nearly 50% just since the industrial revolution. On the current path, CO2 is predicted to attain levels associated with unthinkable consequences in the Earth's ecosystems, culminating in the Sixth Mass Extinction. Our fate is not yet sealed, however. We have the means at our command to avert the worst consequences. The instructors will describe the background of climate change in depth, then bring their original research to bear on the technologic means of stabilizing CO2 levels, and go on to address the even greater challenges related to the human psyche of attaining consensus on the need to act decisively and how to mobilize the resources to make it happen. Guest experts will further spark ideas and conversation around local, national and global efforts with which they are involved. The class will be conducted in symposium style with discussion and class participation to create and gear up for positive shifts in human culture.
